TIME FOR A SMILE: WHIMSY RULES
There’s so much bad news these days that one literally aches for some sunshine in the papers. Fortunately, Michael Kesterton at the Globe and Mail amasses daily interesting and often instructive tidbits of information and wisdom in his “Social Studies: A Daily Miscellany of Information.” Today he noted, among other bon mots, a report from social workers in Lower Saxony in Germany, contacted by a worried mother who was concerned at her daughter’s “loose morals”. They were taken aback when they found out the ages of the two women–the mother was 92 and the daughter 68. They told the mom that her offspring’s love life was really none of her business. Adelheid Schmidt should leave daughter Tina alone.
This recalled another story from the same category. Some years ago, a divorce court judge in Manitoba was shocked when a 92 year-old woman and her 90 year-old husband showed up to ask for a consensual divorce. “My God,” the judge asked the pair, “why have you waited so long to ask for a divorce?”
“We wanted to wait until the children were dead,” was the straight-faced response.
