Subject: Clinton and Obama
The editors’spirited declaration that Hilary Rodham Clinton and
Barack Obama should be judged on their ideas not their race or sex
in their campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination
(Jan. 23) misses the real news. Until now their ideas would have
been irrelevant, trumped by sex and race, respectively. They
would not have had the opportunity to “prove their mettle.”
What we may be witnessing at this point is the end of the long standing
–some 230 years– Affirmative Action Program for white men in
their quest for the highest office in the United States. Given
the last man to win this office, we can be especially grateful
that the competition has been opened up.
