The WebMistress explains how to use the HIST 275 WebCT page

I hope Geoff doesn't mind me sticking this page in here...in the meantime, I've left it plain and easily printable. WebCT works fine with both PC and Apple platforms. If you're using XWindows, you have my undying love and admiration but I don't know how well it works with this. (NO, that is NOT the same thing as WindowsXP, so don't panic)

How do I get in?
Just go to the WebCT homepage and click on Log on to myWebCT. Plug in your Queen's userid (mine is 3do5) and your original Qlink password.

If you don't know what your Qlink ID or original password is, click here. If none of this works, email me (mind the spamguard) with your Qlink ID (if known) and your student number so I can fix it. Make sure you have Javascript enabled on your browser or the page won't behave properly.

I'm a TA and I can't get in.
Please email me and I'll add you straightaway. Unfortunately, only people registered in the course are automatically added. Also, you will need a Queen's userid, so you'll have to get one (see above) if you usually use a different ISP for all your mail.

It crashed my Netscape!
Unfortunately, this version of WebCT doesn't support Netscape 6 or Mozilla as yet. Communicator 4.78 is as far as they go at the moment. ITS is aware of the problem and suggests using IE or an older version of Netscape. [NB: one ITS employee claims Mozilla 0.9.4 will work. Your mileage may vary]

What does "Readings" mean?
On that page, you can download texts in MSWord format, such as the "Nativism" and "We Have Already Lost" essays, which don't print properly from the regular HIST 275 pages. This should work for Mac users too, provided they have MSOffice. If not, let me know.

What's the difference between "Discussion Forum" and "Chat LIVE!"?
One is a text-based bulletin board, the other is a real-time, ICQ-style chat. Feel free to play around in the "Test messages" topic on the Discussion Forum until you get the hang of things. Please note that participation in either of these is subject to the Queen's Computer User Code of Ethics. Offensive, obscene, or harassing posts to the Discussion Forum can and will be removed. HOWEVER, beyond those simple guidelines, there is NO censorship, and what is discussed there remains there. As always, the professor has the last word on this.

Why does it say "Conversations in the following rooms will be recorded"?!
That's just a quirk of the WebCT software; Dean Crawford is not watching. Use the main chat room instead.

But there's nobody online to chat with.
You'll only see other people there if they're also logged into the HIST 275 WebCT chat when you are. However, feel free to schedule times to meet, and I can put them on the Calendar if you like. For the TAs, the chat is a neat way of having virtual office hours too.

How do I use the Calendar?
I've added some entries to it, and users can add their own events (public or private). I'll try to add the Bearpit dates when I can. Click on a hyperlinked date to view, add, or edit the schedule.

I wish the WebCT page had...
It's your course! Let me or Geoff know what you'd like to see up there and I'll do my best. We can upload files, create new pages, add an online survey, and many other things.

Where do I go for help?
First, try the "Help" button at the top of the page. If you still require assistance, email me and I'll do what I can.

Calvin is cool.
Yup. If anyone has suitable icons for the Chat LIVE! or Calendar buttons, please pass them along.
