122 "Homage to Courbet" Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20" Inspired by perhaps the most notorious of Courbet's offerings, "The Origin of the World" (1866), considered by some pornographic in its day, but, in time, part of an ouvre that captivated as well as repelled. The Musee d'Orsai has the following to say--an exegesis that led me to work through the original in my own way. "Courbet regularly painted female nudes, sometimes in a frankly libertine vein. But in The Origin of the World he went to lengths of daring and frankness which gave his painting its peculiar fascination. The almost anatomical description of female sex organs is not attenuated by any historical or literary device. Yet thanks to Courbet's great virtuosity and the refinement of his amber colour scheme, the painting escapes pornographic status. This audacious, forthright new language had nonetheless not severed all links with tradition: the ample, sensual brushstrokes and the use of colour recall Venetian painting and Courbet himself claimed descent from Titian and Veronese, Correggio and the tradition of carnal, lyrical painting." suggested, in Laura Moreland's words, "get
out your brushes, Smithers." So I did.
Ontario sunsets are non-pareil.
162 "Aurora Aura" 16 x 20" Acrylic on canvas. Yes, I love polar bears, especially those who are watching the northern lights. I found a painting by a Metis artist, Dawn Oman, from Yellowkife, and I was taken...it's entitled "Sky Watchers," and I can say that I hardly do justice to her talent. But at least the bears are smiling.
And so am I. (added Sept 6 2013)
163 "The Osprey Nest" Oil and acrylic on canvas 16 x 20"
We've lived with a burgeoning osprey family on the island all summer. Now, with autumn rushing pall mall at us, I thought that it would be interesting to locate that nest, amidst the emerging fall colours.... hope you can see the nest. Added Sept 18 2013
164 "Swan Lake" Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20"
Found something like this on the 'net and thought
I'd give it a try. I love watersheds and birds. An
important part of our lives, for so many reasons.
good wishes, happy fall! (Added September 23 2013)
165 "Magicland" acrylic on canvas 16 x 20"
I think that Jackie Baker and his friend, Puff, the Magic Dragon lived near here. Saw a similar item on facebook, crocheted I think, and said, hey why not?? You only live once.....Happy fall everyone....
166 "Dusk in Tuscany" Acrylic on canvas
16 x 20"
Tuscany, one of my favourite places to visit. Thinking of getting back there. Love the villas and the red poppies...... (added Nov 2 2013)
167 "Vantage Point" Acrylic on canvas 10 x 10"
after Courtenay Birdsall Clifford, "Sentry" Courtenay
Clifford's original struck me for its ability to convey the
sense of great distance, colour, and beauty that one encounters
in the Yukon and Alaska. Almost around every turn. And one
envies the ravens that keep a sharp eye out--they are ubiquitous,
especially around people. Uploaded Nov 4 2013
168 "Snowstorm" acrylic and oil on board
8 x 10"
'tis the season to await the snow....when will it come? Always the question.....We may see flurries tonight or tomorrow.....but one thing is for sure: the snow will fly, soon.....
Enjoy autumn, it's fleeting! Upload Nov 10 2013
169 "In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks." -John Muir
"Tahoe Heaven" after a photo on Pat Riley's fb page. No explanation needed. Acrylic on wood 36 x 36"
The Sierras will get snow tonight, and the lake will beam! "Enjoy the land, use it wisely, recognize its frailty as you embrace its beauty." -- Geoff Smith Uploaded Nov 20 2013
170 "Magic Forest" Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20"
after Tom Thomson, "Autumn Birches"
21.6 x 26.7 cms
oil on wood panel (1916)
OK, folks, it's grey, grey, grey, back here, and one wonders if
colour will ever appear again. You know that as a Canadian artist,
I am besotted with the Group of Seven. And yes, there is colour
galore in their work. Tom Thomson, I salute you! Added Dec 7 2013
171 "Mallard" acrylic on board 6 x 8"
I guess this is not weather for ducks, but I was taken by the story and two photos by Margaret Bream in Sunday's Toronto Star on the mating games of the mallard duck. Perhaps a good omen for the
Univ. of Oregon football team?
Best from the cold, Geoff // Uploaded Dec 11, 2013
172 "Iran Moment" (Abstr.) Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20"
All here is ice right now; hence when I first saw this (Monir Shalmoudy Farmanfarmaian, Untitled 1977) in the NYR of Books, Dec 19, @p. 20, I said, hey, why not. Warmth. Colliding and (I think) complementary colours. And much to ponder in our world -- this piece is part of the first large U.S. exhibition of art created in the thirty years prior to Iran's Revolution in 1979. Added December 28, 2013.
173 "My Dog, Forest" acrylic on board 6 x 8"
after a photo by Ceci Flinn
Always remember how much Forest loved to run in the snow. Maybe he is doing that somewhere at this moment. Have fun in the snow! Added Dec 28 2013
174 "Under the Volcano, or Homage to Harrison Ford"
acrylic, oil, ink on wood 24 x 24"
Influenced by David Hockney, "Nichols Canyon," a spot high in the Hollywood hills. Love Hockney's ability with colour, contrast, complexity. Influenced by Paul Klee. Hockney's painting lacked the volcano. But that's OK. And, yes, there is hope that colours such as these will soon arrive in our neck of the woods.....They're already present in CA....yes, I heard someone say, not a coherent landscape, but, I retort, a congeries of views along the road of life.....

176 "Etude de ciel au soleil couchant..." with Eugene Delacroix
15 x 20" water colour on wood. The French painter is one of my favourites to contemplate, as he does so well with nuanced representations of colour. My art history classes at UCSB back in the early 1960s made me aware of his talent and his ability to read so much into such subtle representations.......

177 "Truro Redux"
(Homage to Mitchell Johnson)
Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20"
Johnson is a California artist known for his ability with geometrical shapes, urban and seaside settings, and exceptional talent (lacking in this painter) to render small, sharp, and straight lines. His work is worth googling. He has done "Truro" many times, each time with a different, often whimsical, spirit. I like water, and this suggests to me that we may even be swimming one of these days..... Happy spring, and let's get some heat going... geoff

178 "All We Are Saying......"
acrylic on canvas, 24 x 36"
Given the wretched state of the world, the ubiquity of violence and suffering. I thought it time to make a pitch for peace, which begins with individuals, regardless of their location or preference. People -- work at it. Spring is here, and we need to renew efforts to stop war and violence everywhere.

179 "Spring Valley" oil on canvas 16 x 20"
Gotta say, even though April showers bring May Flowers, we'd like to see some sun. Very grey, May. Let's pull for a run of clear and warm.
Happy Spring, Geoff
180 "Purple Mountain..."
10 x 14" Acrylic on canvas board
An original, by Barbara J. Carter, a California-based pointillist, inspired me to do this little painting, reminding me of many places where water, fields, and mountains intersect. Yes, that is snow up there on top--and it will stay all year. Ours is now gone. Barely. Best to all!
181 "Do You Like Tulips?"
Acrylic on canvas 6 x 24"
inspired by a watercolour by Ottawa-based painter, Janick Lorion. I love tulips. The Dutch lived off tulips at the end of the Second World War. The squirrels in the front yard ate all of our tulips. They have good appetites. But they cannot eat this painting. Dedicated to spring and all of you who have spring in your heart.
182 "Outlands" Acrylic on canvas board 10 x 14"
Inspired by Franklin Carmichael's "Autumn," in McMichael Gallery in TO. A nice mix of colours and a trip through the Dakotas made me think that it would be fun to try to replicate part of Carmichael's gorgeous piece of work. Cheers as summer allegedly gets ready to spring upon us......spring in Kingston often does not last long. Best, Geoff
183 "Evening on the Rideau Canal"
Acrylic on canvas 18 x 24"
from a photograph--nothing nicer than a nice sunset, and for those of you who have plied the Rideau, I'm certain this will resonate. Even those who have not traveled those wonderful waters. Summer's coming. Best, Geoff

184 "Malibu Burns" Acrylic on canvas 16 x 20"
It's been a hot summer in the West, with little rain and lots of fire. Combining history, memory and impressions, I came up with this rendition of LA in flames. Hope you Californians get rain soon!!
Best regards from Kingston, where it does rain

I love fall colours, and we are almost there. This mix of sky and mountain made me yearn for some of the sights seen this summer on a journey through Pennsylvania to North Carolina.

186 "A Very, Very, Very FIne House" watercolour on paper 18 x 24"
Inspired by a photo in the Globe and Mail some time ago, of an environmentally friendly abode, built by the Montreal architects, L'OEUF, with windows that allow sun to heat the concrete floor. "The right way to go green," the Globe suggested.

187 "Lighthouse at Point Arena CA" acrylic on canvas 16 x 20"
From a photo on a recent trip through the Mendocino area, and struck by a superb sight. The lighthouse (we did not see either the keeper or his daughter) commands a spectacular promontory, one that invites the visitor to take some time at this venue. All best, Geoff

188 "Evolution" watercolour 12 x 16"
Just fooling around after reading that several states are now working to outlaw the teaching of evolution in the schools--high and otherwise. I have long adhered to an evolutionary view of human progress (or the lack thereof), especially when I view my grand-daughter's exceptional work on the "monkey" bars (get it?) after school. There can be no question about the debt we humans owe to those primordial apes, chimps, monkeys of all variety.
On this note, a very merry Christmas to all -- including of course all the other celebrations as well. Yes, we must admit that we are held together as humans by our indebtedness to those who preceded us in swinging from and in the trees.....

190 "Pigeon Point Lighthouse (California), Moonset at Dawn...."
Acrylic on canvas 18 x 24"
There are special moments, and Matt Walker captured one on the 'Net at Santa Cruz Waves. It's an easy and uplifting Google, especially at this time of year. We are looking forward to seeing sights such as these, once spring really makes its presence known. Too much grey in Kingston, now time for some colour!

191 "Icicle Moon" Acrylic on canvas 10 x 20"
Based on a photo I took a few years ago on Earl Street. Struck by the juxtaposition at dusk of two very long icicles and a moon as
backdrop. The icicles are now going, although the chill survives. Snow even in the forecast tonight. But I know one thing for sure, and that is warm weather is not too far away. You appreciate the latter so much more when you live with ice and snow for much of the year......Happy spring!

192 "Dusk on the Farm" Acrylic on Canvas 16 x 16"
adapted from an Internet photo, and dedicated to

things will get warm as we head for the cusp of summer, solstice

194 "Summer of '15"
watercolour on paper 24 x 36"
Yes, you've seen the original before, pristine, clear day. great sky.....but now the picture is sullied by a forest fire, that sprang up after a lightning storm. How important our watershed is, and how fragile, especially in drought conditions. Nature decrees that fire cleanses, over time. We venture into nature at our own risk......Human hubris, I suspect.
